Westland Whirlwind mb-height 6930 wearing a labelled collarWestland Whirlwind, 1941. The twin engined Whirlwind was one of the fastest and most heavily armed fighters when it first flew in 1938. Problems with the development of the aircraft's Rolls Royce Peregrine engines delayed the construction and deployment of the Whirlwind, and only 116 were built, between 1940 and 1942. A print from British Fighters, by Lawrence Fairhall, London Robert Ross & Co Ltd, 1941.
