The dealer in my neck of the woods that I purchased this root burl stool from believed it to be antique Chinese--and looking at some images of Chinese root wood "scholar's stools
visible when looking inside but not evident otherwise
but I love it--in very large part because of that meat-like melon (with those very pork chop looking slices) which gives the whole thing a Chaïm Soutine sort of flavor in addition to lending it a certain eroticism
and many more into the mix

My first thought, at this particular moment, was to read the three "X"s as a row X chromosomes, and so as stand ins for women, forming a blockade, (i. e. hands off my body, thank you
