House Passes Economic Stimulus Bill
Fed keeps interest rate near zero, tries other ways to fix economy!
*FOMC HOLDS RATE AT 0.25%;
Prepared to buy longer term treasuries if could improve credit market conditions, rate may be 'exceptionally' low for period of time
- Reiterates inflation could persist below desirable levels in the coming quarters, credit conditions are extremely tight for households and firms.
- Vote was 8-1 (Lacker Dissented, preferring to purchase US Treasuries)
- Fed states "Information received since the Committee met in December suggests that the economy has weakened further"
- May see gradual recovery in the economy later in 2009, some conditions in financial markets have improved
- Discount rate remains unchanged at 0.50%
*(US) HOUSE HAS ENOUGH VOTES TO PASS $819B ECONOMIC STIMULUS PLAN (as expected);
- Final vote was 244 to 188; No GOP house members voted in favor of the bill
- The measure willl now go to the Senate.
- Follow Up as of 6:19 PM: Senate Majority Leader Reid says that he seeks to start the stimulus debate on Monday.
